Spiritual writers in the Christian tradition often speak of three stages in
our experience of God: Purgative, Illuminative, and unitive stages.
These three stages are attributed to Pseudo-Dionysius (a theologian and
philosopher of the late 5th century and early 6th century), and theologians
such as St Bonaventure (1221-1274) have discussed it further, they are
also recognisable in the writings of Carmelite mystics (Teresa of Avila, St
John of the Cross, and Teresa of Child Jesus).
As one moves from prayer to contemplation these stages also become
more vivid. They could be recognised by the individual with the help of a
spiritual guide who is familiar with this discourse.
